Glastonbury Alert: Skunk breeding season is at its peak. [See the 2026 RF Wildlife Activity Report] for local trapping and odor control.
Right now — early March 2026 — skunk breeding season is hitting its peak across Connecticut. Males are roaming miles from their dens looking for mates, females are getting ready to give birth in just a few weeks, and homeowners are seeing more skunks than any other time of year.

We’re seeing it firsthand:
- I just finished a skunk removal in Glastonbury yesterday.
- I’m heading to a Colchester skunk trapping & exclusion jobs regularly.
- Dead skunk Spotting’s on roads like Rt 9 near the Higganum exit recently — a classic sign of males traveling during breeding season.
If you’re smelling skunk odor or seeing one in your yard right now, call or text us immediately: (860) 510-6313 — we can usually respond the same day.

Why Skunks Are Extra Active During Breeding Season
- Males wander 2–5 miles at night searching for females
- Females start denning under homes, sheds, and crawlspaces
- Roadkill spikes because males ignore traffic while looking for mates
- Skunk spray incidents increase as territorial fights break out
Left alone, a female skunk can have 4–7 or more kits in April or May — I’ve seen 11 at a single job in East Hampton back in 2015 — and once those babies are mobile, the problem multiplies fast.
Local Pro Tip for Colchester & Glastonbury Homeowners In towns like Colchester and Glastonbury, we see a lot of skunks denning under porches and sheds near the woods. If your property backs up to the Salmon River State Forest area, keep your perimeter clear of leaves and debris — it’s one of the fastest ways to stop them from moving in.

Exclusion Plan During the Breeding Season
We do not do exclusions at the height of the breeding season. The female skunks’ pheromones are strong and can pull males from up to 5 miles away. Our goal is to catch and remove the female (or females — we’ve seen communal dens before), not every skunk in a five-mile radius.
This saves you money and is the ethical thing to do. I want to be able to sleep at night.
After securing the female(s), we simply wait. The males come in at night, sniff around, find no female, and leave on their own. Doing a full exclusion before the end of breeding season could actually cause more harm than good — males will try to dig in at all costs and linger in the area.
The exclusion we do is for next year’s skunks, not this year’s. We do the Exclusion as soon as the breeding season ends (or tell you what to do if you want to exclude yourself) After 16+ years of dealing with nothing but animals, this has always been the best approach.
Prevention Tips While Breeding Season Is Hot
- Secure garage doors Males who lose the fight tend to not go far
- Check for gaps under decks, porches, and crawlspaces
- Install motion lights or a radio playing at night
- Remove any pet food or bird seed left outside
