Mole in CT Lawn

Mole Elimination in Connecticut

Who doesn’t love a beautiful lawn? But are you afraid that moles are digging tunnels in yours? Not only will they damage the look of your lawn, they will also make it difficult for you to walk on your own land. They damage the land by disturbing the plant and tree roots and hence affecting their growth. Since they make tunnels in the ground, they allow other animals to travel using this path too, hence increasing the chances of destruction by others too. Moles can also damage the underground irrigation system and carry disease in the form of clostridium potentially spreading it to pets and livestock. Our mole control trapping program is designed for complete year round mole control.

Unsure if you have Moles In Your Yard?

An easy way to check this is simply to walk in your lawn and notice if your feet are sinking in the soil. Also watch out for any ‘Molehills’ that are areas of raised soil formed due to burrows dug by the moles. In addition to this, if your neighbors are dealing with moles there is a high probability that your yard has them even if you have put a fence atleast 2 feet below the property line moles will dig underneath.

How moles survive underground and in Winter?

Moles can survive underground as they can tolerate high level of carbon dioxide as compared to other mammals. They can also reuse their own exhaled air allowing them to survive in their burrows where the oxygen level is relatively lower. They feed on earthworms and due to a toxin in their saliva they can also paralyze earthworms and keep them to eat later and therefore they never run out of food. Your moles are not going anywhere unless you let RF wildlife control to trap them and make sure your land is free of them.

Moles can dig faster than you think they can. Their rate of digging is about 18 feet per hour which to be honest is a lot. So time is literally ticking while you are still thinking of wether or not you want to get rid of them! They travel at a speed of 80 feet per minute.
Female moles have a gestation period of about one month only and give birth to 2-6 moles usually in March and April (spring). This means the population is continuously on the rise and more moles mean more damage. Since moles do not hibernate in winters they are causing trouble all year long. Mole control projects can occur during winter if the conditions allow.

Commonly found moles in Connecticut are The Eastern mole and the Star Nosed Mole. The former is the most common one while the latter is usually found near swamps and poorly drained areas as it can swim through the tunnels and is typically caught in rainy season.

How to get rid of moles in your yard?

You are very wrong if you think you can get rid of moles just by using some home remedies. Honestly you do not have to waste your time, money and energy on it. You might have already tried poison gummy worms and grub control. Grub control is the most ineffective method tried for mole control since grubs are more of a treat then a staple. The best analogy is grubs are steak and earthworms are hamburgers, yes steak taste better but hamburgers fill you just as good. Try Grub control for skunks not moles. They feed on insects mainly earthworms so grub control is not going to help in anyway. Moreover there are some repellants available on the market. These deterrents aim to repel the moles away from your property but are only limitedly effective. Not to forget that they have to be applied multiple times with no surety that they will work. Many of them are castor oil based which tends to irritate the mole’s skin or works by repelling them due to its unpleasant smell  so this method is unlikely to work if the tunnels are deep. Another method that has been tried by many is the use of poisons. These poisoned pellets come with their own problems. If they are hard, moles are not going to chew them well. For moles to chew them they need to be soft similar to the consistency of an earthworm. Since Moles can sense human scent there are chances they will not eat the bait and hence this method is not good either.

Mole trapping Is the most effective mole control method.

What happens when you hire us for your Mole control?

When you choose to engage our mole control services, we begin with an in-depth inspection of your property. By locating the network of tunnels built by moles, we can strategically position our traps for maximum effectiveness. We primarily employ Trapline mole traps and Victor Out-of-Sight traps, both of which are proven to be highly effective in capturing moles.

The art of placing traps lies in identifying active tunnels, which is where our professional expertise comes in. Our team is skilled in accurately pinpointing these tunnels, ensuring that traps are placed in the optimal locations for successful mole capture. Trust our professionals to handle your mole control needs with efficiency and precision.

How to identify active tunnels?

1. Collapse the ridge made by the moles by stepping on it.

2. Wait and see if it reappears in 24-48 hours. If it reappears, this means that the tunnel is active as indicated by the repairment of the tunnel.

3. If it does not reappear, try again and check a new site for activity.

To achieve the best results, we focus on relatively straight active tunnels for mole trap placement. We first dig along the ridge above the tunnel to reveal the mole burrow. Upon locating the tunnel, we set the trap, replace the soil, and pack it tightly around the trap. The trigger is then pressed into the burrow, creating an obstruction that will prompt the mole to activate the trigger when attempting to clear the tunnel.

For easy identification and access during follow-up visits, we flag the areas where traps are placed. We return every 4-5 days to remove trapped moles and continue the process until the area is clear. A comprehensive re-inspection is conducted afterward to check for any additional mole activity.

At RF Wildlife Control, we pride ourselves on our exceptional safety record for mole control in CT. As our traps are placed underground, they are highly unlikely to cause harm to pets. Nonetheless, we still recommend taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your furry friends.
