Main Villages, Hamlets, and Neighborhoods in Colchester, CT

Colchester is a rural-suburban town in New London County with a main town center and several smaller villages/hamlets. These are the primary ones referenced in town documents, Wikipedia, real estate listings, and local sources:

  • Colchester Center (or Colchester Village) — The historic town center and main hub, featuring the town green, shops, restaurants, the Colchester Village Historic District, Old Bacon Academy, and Cragin Memorial Library. It’s a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of around 4,700 (2020 census), serving as the commercial and community focal point.
  • Westchester — A rural hamlet in the southwest part of town, centered at the intersection of Routes 16 and 149. It’s smaller and more village-like, with open spaces, wooded areas, and potential for pedestrian-friendly growth as noted in the town’s Plan of Conservation and Development. Recent local reports highlight skunk activity in Colchester overall, including a confirmed rabid skunk near Caverly Mill Road/Norwich Avenue in September 2025 (Chatham Health District alert — avoid wild animals and keep pets vaccinated). Sightings and odor complaints appear on trails, roadsides, and Facebook groups in Colchester areas, including friendly daytime skunks noted in spring 2025.
  • North Westchester — Another rural section/hamlet in the northern part of town, often grouped with Westchester as “North Westchester / Westchester” in real estate and neighborhood profiles. It’s quieter and more spread out, with established homes (many built 1970–1999) and a low-density feel.

Other informal or smaller areas sometimes referenced in real estate listings and subdivisions:

  • Village at Colchester — A specific 55+ active adult residential community of attached ranch-style townhomes (around 1,600 sq ft), offering low-maintenance living with open yards and a community vibe in a quieter town section. Like many Colchester neighborhoods, its landscaped lawns, wooded edges, and nearby fields attract nuisance skunks — a top wildlife complaint here due to easy digging for grubs/insects and denning under structures.

Colchester’s overall layout emphasizes its rural charm with scattered hamlets and planned communities rather than large distinct suburbs. For wildlife issues like skunks (common across these areas due to lawns, woods, and food sources), RF Wildlife serves Colchester and nearby towns with humane removals for homeowners.

RF Wildlife – Humane Skunk Removal & Trapping in Colchester CT and Surrounding Towns

RF Wildlife provides professional, humane skunk removal and trapping services throughout Colchester and the surrounding towns, including Hebron, Marlborough, Salem, East Haddam, Glastonbury, and Cromwell.

In Connecticut, the vast majority of skunks we encounter and remove are striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) – the classic black-and-white variety you’re most likely to see digging in lawns, under decks, or spraying near homes. I have never removed a spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) in CT during my 16+ years of service – they are extremely rare here and not established in our region.

Even in nearby Marlborough, every skunk I’ve trapped has been a striped skunk. The one exception I recall was a job down by the lake in East Haddam, where I successfully trapped striped skunks in a lakeside yard – still the common species, but one was pure black a bit more unique.

If you’re dealing with skunk odor, dug-up lawns, burrows under structures, or spray incidents in Colchester or any of these towns, don’t risk DIY methods that often lead to spraying or escalation. As a veteran-owned, licensed Connecticut NWCO (#N1102), RF Wildlife uses DEEP-compliant live trapping, one-way exclusion, secure barriers to resolve the issue safely and permanently.

Humane Skunk Trapping Specialists in Colchester

Above is a picture of a typical skunk trapping load — our standard setup includes a covered, solid-sided or low-profile live trap (like a spray-proof box trap or modified cage trap) baited and placed strategically to capture striped skunks safely without the risk of spray.

Skunks often emerge from the woods into open lawns, where they seek out safe denning spots. They prefer to make their homes under decks, sheds, or the root balls of fallen trees because these locations offer higher safety — predators are less likely to reach them underneath structures. Skunks are also capable of squeezing into crawlspaces, with entry holes commonly found against foundations, walkways, or gaps in siding.

Skunk trapping in Colchester CT can be particularly interesting, as some jobs involve both skunks and woodchucks (groundhogs) sharing the same burrow systems or nearby areas — especially on the Lake Hayward side of town, where watery edges and open fields create ideal habitat for both species. We use humane, DEEP-compliant live traps (typically medium to large cage traps like Tomahawk-style models, 24–36 inches long, with 1×1 or 1×2 inch mesh for selectivity) that hold the animal alive for safe relocation or exclusion follow-up. These traps are often covered with a tarp or dark fabric to calm the skunk and minimize stress/spray risk.

Common bait setups include strong-smelling attractants placed far back in the trap (to ensure the full body enters before triggering): canned cat food (fish-flavored), sardines, crispy bacon, peanut butter on bread, eggs, marshmallows, or chicken. We avoid baits that attract non-target animals when possible and always check traps daily per regulations. Typically we use marshmallows and a commercial paste bait. We also use traps we do not need to bait, they go over the entrance.

As a veteran-owned, licensed NWCO (#N1102), RF Wildlife handles all trapping humanely — no poisons, no unnecessary risks — with full exclusion, odor cleanup, and prevention to stop repeats. If you’re seeing skunk signs in Colchester (dug lawns, odor, burrows under decks/sheds), call or text 860-510-6313 for a free inspection and quote. We’re local to the shoreline/Middlesex area and know these spots well.
