What to look for in a bat removal company
Bat removal is a specialty business, bat removal experts are few and far between. Lately I have been doing inspections on homes who have had many “bat experts” out inspecting their homes. These “bat experts” have been filling home owners heads with complete BS to put it bluntly. They have been telling people bats are getting in at locations that are impossible for bats to access. This brings me to point number one.
- The bat removal company should know bat behavior.
- Knowledge of construction is a necessity when doing bat proofing (bat exclusions).
- They should answer questions without getting angry at the homeowner for asking them (more common then you would believe)
- Is the person doing the inspection going to be the one doing the work? This is HUGE salesman are for the sale, the guy doing the work is looking at how they are getting to the areas needing fixing.
Does the “bat expert” know bat behavior?
Find a bat removal expert that understands the behavior of the bat specie in your home. A large portion of a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators job is knowing animal behavior. If you do not know the animal how can you fix the problem? These “experts” are telling home owners that bats are getting into places bats are incapable of accessing. Many are doing full exclusions in the winter. Bats hibernate, it is NEVER a good idea to do bat control work in winter. Imagine being the bat and waking up to find every door and window of the house has been sealed up. They will be following air currents trying to get out. Doing bat work in winter can lead to bats getting into your living space.
Does the “bat expert” know construction?
Bats do not chew like other animals. They access your home mostly through construction gaps that are left on purpose when building a home. I was a full time union carpenter when I first started RF Wildlife part time. Understanding construction has made me one of the better wildlife guys in the area. My latest bat inspection the company the home owner almost went with a company that told them bats are getting in at a vinyl soffit. I hopped on a ladder and pulled open the soffit showing the J channel the other company said the bats were getting in at. Showing how it was physically impossible saved the home owner thousands of dollars. Bat exclusions are expensive enough when you are not fixing what is not broke.
Is the person doing the inspection unwilling to answer questions?
I gladly take a homeowner with me on inspection. It is easier for me to explain problems as I point out exactly where the problem exists. Some companies treat the inspection process like a trade secret. Nothing that they are doing is not on the internet, come along for the education. I will point things out that you may not know about that requires a different trade. This also allows you to see if the person doing the inspection knows what they are doing. It is good having the home owner along during an inspection, I will also be asking questions while pointing to things such as “Are you hearing anything at night at this corner near that rake board end”? This question may sound Greek to you now but when I am pointing to the Rake board it makes perfect sense.
Who does the bat work, is the person inspecting doing the work?
This is huge. I really do not get how these companies operate. The person doing the inspection should be the person doing the work. No amount of paperwork will replace this, and how do you know the person working on the home has the same knowledge as the guy selling the job to you? Go look at pest control companies reviews many will say the initial guy was great but the follow up was a disaster. These big companies can hire an army (and they do) to bury bad reviews yet you will still find the reviews that complain the tech was not as good as the last tech. When you call me you call the guy who has written this, does the inspection, does the work, does the follow up, and is the guy who comes out if a problem arises.
Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators NWCO’s are the bat experts in CT
Many people think exterminator when they have anything critters from moles in the yard to spiders and raccoons in their crawlspace. Exterminators are glad of this and many are trying to provide wildlife control services. Notice the exterminators website, wildlife control is an after thought. Many of the exterminators will not provide wildlife control when bugs are active. Exterminators are the bug guys not who to call for wildlife problems. You are looking for a
Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator company first. Even if you do not call and hire me do yourself a favor and make sure that you call a wildlife company not a pest company. Be EXTREMLY wary of national chains. RF Wildlife is locally owned and operated by a US Army Veteran. I am a NWCO and am not going to try an upsell you on things you do not need.
