- Is anyone in the house unable to speak if they got bit or scratched? (like very young child)
- Was anyone who may have had contact with the bat sleeping?
- Do you have pets and are they up to date on rabies vaccine?
I ask these questions because other sites will tell you how to return the bat outside. If you answered yes to the above questions you will want to catch the bat euthanize it, then have it tested for rabies. Catching the bat flying in the house is usually pretty easy if you have eyes on it. A great way is using a tennis racket or bad mitten racket and swat it out of the air. The bat will usually be doing circles around the room tapping its wings against the walls. The head must be intact for them to test the brain for rabies. You can then place the bat in a bag and put it in a cool place like a refrigerator. DO NOT FREEZE the bat to be tested. Call your local health department many of them will transport the bat for testing. Rocky Hill is the test site used mostly in my bat service area. I have taken bats that tested positive for rabies in Connecticut but it is not very common to do so. If you can not find the bat contact your physician, Your Doctor may want you to get rabies shots as a precaution. Contact your local health department — testing is usually done at the Rocky Hill lab.
